1Thessa. 4: 12 (KJV)

12That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

It has been observed, “it would be a shame to see Christians beg of any, and especially of the unbeliever for their necessary relief. Or, of nothing; that you may by your own labor be able to subsist, and not depend upon others, and so not be a burden to friends, or a scandal to strangers.”

Paul having exhorted the Thessalonians to industry and diligence in the foregoing verse, he presses it with a double argument in this verse. The first being honesty and now we see dependency. It is needful to remember that it is because of God’s blessing upon their industry, they would attain to such a competency of the things of this life, as to lack nothing which the wisdom of God saw fit and convenient for them; so that by industrious diligence we please God, we profit ourselves, are serviceable to the public, we silence and stop the mouths of the enemies of religion and beautify our profession with a becoming conversation.

It is also important to note what the apostle was conveying to his reader as well as us, is that by working with our own hands, be independent of the support other men can afford us; and that may want nothing or, of no man, have no need to beg of any man; anything that is needful for life and godliness. For every man to subsist by his own labor, was the primitive law to Adam, Genesis 3:19, commended often by Solomon in his Proverbs, and enjoined by the apostle to believing Christians, 2 Thessalonians 3:10.

Such behavior not only results in the Christian getting his or her needs met, but it meets with the approval and admiration of non-believers who observe him or her. Seeing that he lacks nothing which is needful for support, comfort, and usefulness. Being reminded that it is God Who supplies all our wants and enables us to pay our debts, support ourselves or families, and to be useful to our fellow-men. Let us always remember that our God shall supply all YOUR/MY needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Have a great and God filled day!
